Spoiler Free: I avoided anything to do with this movie based on what I had heard. hide and seek with weird family. Felt weird and one of those dumb 'Truth or Dare' type movies. But it's so much more. It felt more akin to You're Next, one of my favorite horror movies of the past decade. Samara Weaving and Adam Brody are great. All the other actors feel believable but also are sorta cartoonish? There's as believable as you can imagine someone could be in that situation. Good camera work. And for a movie set mostly at night, it is never too dark.
Spoilers- the little Satan twist was neat, although personally I would've liked a little more ambiguity in it. It was fun, but the whole exploding and then seeing the dude in the flame just felt like a bit much all at once, but that's more my preference to leaving it more open-ended as opposed to a critique. Samara Weaving is just fantastic. Really sells the emotion of someone stuck in this situation. I think maybe she's a bit too quipy and I would've preferred if the comedy came mostly from the family, but still great emotions on display. Adam Brody is great. Steals every scene he's in honestly. He's either hilarious or giving such a good performance. At first I was upset he died like that, but it was better than having to see the one sympathetic person in the family die like that. I think it was fairly obvious that Alex was gonna flip on Grace eventually. It was either that or die. I'm glad it was after his mother had died and not like 'ooh i tricked you, I'm gonna kill you because I'm evil.' The mom is fine, nothing great but nothing bad either. It was great seeing the Dad become more and more unraveled as the night progressed. The sister and her husband feel the most outlandish but it works more than it fails. Aunt was creepy but I wish we spent more time on the backstory of her. I felt like maybe 5 more minutes or so to establish more of her backstory could've added a lot more depth to the character. Butler and maids are there to add to the kills. And they do not shy away from the kills. Blood and gore galore. But it's mostly played for laughs? There's really only like one or two scenes that are like hard to watch. It's fun throughout, mostly because of the acting. It's more of a horror comedy. but like horror/thriller first, comedy second. Think more Scream or You're Next as oppose to like Seed of Chucky or Scary Movie. Watch it. Support original films. Even if it's now owned by Disney.
